Scholarship Requirements:
- International students with outstanding academic records
- Applicants must wish to enter Japan in September 2023 as a new student.
- The scholarship is applicable for the Master's or Doctoral Program at the Graduate School of Science.
- For those who have already graduated from their latest degree program, a final grade point of 2.30 or higher is required.
- Current students must have a grade point of 2.30 or higher for their ongoing courses and maintain the same academic standards throughout the scholarship program.
- Grade points will be calculated using the formula specified by MEXT.
- Additionally, students must fulfill one of the criteria outlined under "(7) Language Proficiency."

Scholarship Duration and Reward
The number of applicants to be nominated by the Graduate School of Science to the University of Tokyo, as well as the number to be subsequently nominated by the University of Tokyo to MEXT, shall be finalized after the application period has closed. In the last round (application for 2020 entrance) each Graduate School was allowed to nominate at most one applicant, and the University of Tokyo was allowed to nominate at most three applicants to MEXT.

Duration of Award: For a recipient who will enroll in a Master’s Program or Doctoral Program, the scholarship will be payable for the standard period of time necessary for the recipient to complete his or her program (standard course term), starting from October 2024.
Master’s Program = October, 2024 – September, 2026 (2years)
Doctoral Program = October, 2024 – September, 2027 (3years)

The name of the addressee stated in the letter must be “the President of the University of Tokyo” The letter must be printed on your university’s letterhead.
The letter must be written by and signed by a dean or above.

Application Process:
Application Instructions
To apply for the MEXT Scholarship, applicants must first complete the admission application for entry into the Master's/Doctoral Program, following the guidelines provided in the "Instructions for International Students applying to the Graduate School of Science (Special Selection for International Applicants)."
All required documents must be written in either Japanese or English and formatted in A4 size using software like MS Word. Printing should be done double-sided (duplex printing). For documents in languages other than Japanese, a Japanese translation must accompany them.
Please note that submitted documents will not be returned, and applications received after the submission deadline will not be considered.
Completing all application forms accurately and providing all necessary documents is essential for the application to be considered. In some cases, where documents are issued by government administrative offices in certain countries, the University of Tokyo may need to verify the information with the applicant's previous university.
To ensure a valid application, applicants must submit the required documents for the MEXT Scholarship after completing their admission application for the Graduate School of Science (Master's/Doctoral Program). Both the MEXT scholarship application and the Graduate School of Science admission application must be completed through the respective online forms before the application deadline.
Electronic Application
For electronic submission, applicants must upload all required documents using the designated application form provided before the application deadline. Note that other submission methods, such as via email, will not be accepted.
